Entertaining with Gluten Free Products

You’re having a party and one of your guests has Celiac disease, a condition where the small intestine is damaged by eating foods that contain gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat and many other grains, such as barley and rye. So what do you do? On the surface, the solution sounds simple: don’t serve your guest any food that contains wheat, barley and rye. However, there are foods containing gluten that you may not be aware of, such as soy sauce, gravy, beer, deli meat and sausages.

The first thing you can do is ask your guest for some advice. People with this condition are aware of what they can and cannot eat, so you’ll get some good information and your guest will appreciate your effort to accommodate them. You can also read the ingredients list on the packaging of any foods that you plan to serve to ensure that they do not contain any wheat, barley, oats, rye, triticale, kamut, spelt or any other form of gluten.

On a positive note, there are still a wide variety of tasty foods that are perfectly safe for you to serve, such as unprocessed fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, beans, buckwheat, millet, quinoa and rice. You can even create baked goods for gluten-free guests, as long as you use a gluten-free flour such as corn flour, potato flour, rice flour, tapioca flour or one of the many gluten-free flour blends that are available in most supermarkets.

Alternatively, you can make this task a lot easier by serving some of the exceptional products from the line of President’s Choice® gluten-free products (especially for our Canadian audience). Their goal was to create gluten-free versions of regular foods that taste just as good as the original. In fact, we think these new products are so delicious that you’ll find it hard to believe they’re gluten-free – and we have something to help you through every course of your meal.

For appetizers, their PC® Gluten-Free Crispbread Crackers are great with smoked salmon or cheese. If you’re serving a salad, you can use PC® Gluten-Free Rustic White Loaf to make croutons.
