6 Natural Strategies for Recovery If You Accidentally Ingest Gluten

Whether you were dining out and there was a kitchen mix-up or someone in your home accidentally left microscopic crumbs on the counter, getting “glutened” is no fun. Use these six strategies to stand back up if gluten knocks you down.

1. Drink Ginger Tea.  Ginger is anti-inflammatory and great for ridding the body of toxins. It is also a digestive aid and can reduce feelings of nausea and vomiting. For a single cup: Mix 1 teaspoon grated fresh gingerroot with 6-8 ounces boiling water. Steep five minutes, then sip. Do this up to three times daily to speed recovery. {Note: Ginger is a powerful natural product. Do NOT ingest ginger before speaking to your doctor if you take a blood thinner (ginger can increase the risk of bleeding), if you take medicine for diabetes (ginger can lower blood sugar), or if you take medicine for high blood pressure (ginger can lower blood pressure).}

2. Drink two kinds of water. Liquids are important for recovery. In addition to ginger tea, pure water and coconut water are best. Our bodies are 70% water, so we always need to keep hydrated. After gluten contamination, sip water continuously throughout the day. Aim for at least 60 ounces of water in a 24-hour period. Coconut water contains potassium and various antioxidants that will help your body recover. I do not recommend electrolyte replacement drinks (Gatorade, Powerade, etc.) because they contain high amounts of sugar. Sugar will slow recovery.

3. Get adequate rest.  When we sleep, our bodies repair. If you ingest gluten, your body needs time to heal. Take a break from physical activity for a day or two and allow healing to take place.

4. Stay away from all dairy products (and remember, eggs are not dairy; they are an excellent source of protein if you do not have an egg allergy). Dairy is inflammatory to the human body and blocks nutrient uptake in the small intestine (Yes, just like gluten does!). Even if you normally consume dairy products, your body will recover from accidentally ingesting gluten (or anything else!) much faster if you lay off the dairy, at least until you’re feeling better.

5. Have a bowl of chicken soup.  Chicken soup is healing when made with homemade stock. If you’ve just been contaminated with gluten, you don’t feel like (or have time to) simmering a big batch of stock. That’s why it’s a great idea to have a batch in the freezer! You can learn how I make my own homemade stocks (and terrific uses for them) right HERE. Having a batch in the freezer means in only minutes, you’ll reap healing benefits like: enhanced digestion, readily absorbable minerals, natural gelatins (from meat stocks) to heal the gut, and easily digestible proteins and other nutrients. Of course, if you didn’t get around to freezing homemade stock, a simple search through the Gluten Free Resource Directory will lead you to gluten-free varieties to help you recover.

6. Eat avocado. Avocados are naturally healing, extremely easy to digest, rich in vitamins (vitamins B, K, and E) and nutrients (potassium and healthy monounsaturated fat), and have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. You can mash, slice, or puree them for a quick fix. When you’re up and about and feeling a bit more adventurous, give my unique gluten free avocado recipes a try! Sure, there are expensive drugs and supplements that claim to speed recovery. If you have one that works, by all means keep it on hand. It is my goal to share with you ways we can help heal our bodies naturally with the foods we eat, even when we ingest gluten accidentally. While I hope you never need this information I want you to keep it handy…just in case gluten gets in.

  • Peggy Schulz: Hello, I am trying to find a doctor or dermatologist in Oregon (preferably Medford area) that specializes in DH/Celiac. After going to 5 docs over a couple years, all think I have eczema and even athlete foot or food allergy, spent over $3000 out of pocket for allergy tests etc., I figured out what I have via google! Oh did I tell you I always told my doctors I have celiac. And I always said I have a feeling it an internal issue, not an allergy. And always told them the itch is not normal, it itches to the bone! Not one ever mentioned DH! Apparently I am getting cross contamination, so now staying home for every meal, not eating out, even at friends homes. I would sure like a doctor who 'get's it'!
